I was finally able to get started creating a video. I exported it and watched it as a movie from my computer, but when I tried to bring the video back in to Shotcut, it played, but with no timeline. I made sure to change the properties back to “Open with Shotcut” but still no timeline. Using Windows 10, 8GB, Shotcut 19.04.30.

That is something you do with Windows.
I’m guessing you opened the mp4 file. This is the final product of your work.
If you saved your project, it saves to a .mlt file. This file will have your entire project exactly how you had saved it.
