Shotcut v26 proxy creation freeze

What is your operating system?
I use Linux. My distro is Loc-OS 23, and I work with Shotcut using the AppImage

What is your Shotcut version (see Help > About Shotcut)?
the bug appears starting from version 26.1.16 up to 26.4.3.

Can you repeat the problem? If so, what are the steps?

  • I open Shotcut and create a project

  • Import a video

  • Shotcut creates a proxy

  • Shotcut crashes and won’t close

Those are not the steps I see in the video before it freezes. It looks to me like you emptied the timeline and playlist, choose Add Files to Playlist > OK and then it froze–probably unrelated to proxy. It does not return from the file dialog and show anything related to making or using a proxy. I have not been able to reproduce it, yes, with proxy on. Maybe the problem is related to Add Files to Playlist, or maybe it has something to do with the file dialog on your Linux environment. There are many other ways to open or add video.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share the solution to a preview/timeline issue I was experiencing, in case it helps someone else running into the same problem.

The issue turned out to be the hardware decoding setting for the preview, which was enabled by default and causing stability/playback issues.

How to fix it:

  1. Go to the top menu and click on Settings.

  2. Hover over Preview Scaling.

  3. Uncheck/disable “Use hardware Decoder”.

Once I turned this option off, the performance issues disappeared completely, and the timeline playback became stable again.
