I had the same thing happen to me recently. I was attempting to run it from a Linux Mint 18.2 live CD that was booted inside of a VirtualBox VM (yes, I have a VM that boots into a live CD ISO so I get the benefits of running from a live CD without actually physically booting my computer – a kind of “disposable” VM). I don’t know for sure what caused the error but I suspect that since my system only has 4 gbytes of memory and the VM uses half of that, I may have run out of memory. Normally, I just run Shotcut from a live CD without running in a VM (which means all 4 gbytes are utilized)… BTW, when I got this same error as you, I had installed Shotcut from a PPA rather than using the download from this site, if that matters.
How did you install Shotcut? If you tried to do it with SNAP, uninstall Shotcut.
The “portable” version, available from the Shotcut home site, is the only installation that works. I’ve used it under 16.04.03 LTS without a problem. FWIW, it also works with 17.10 - artful aardvark.
