request for continued 4:3 support

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say how much I appreciate Shotcut. I use it on Linux Mint, and it’s been a really reliable and powerful editor for me—especially considering it’s free and open source, which is amazing.

I mainly work with vintage video formats like Video8 and old tube-based cameras as a hobby (not commercially). These formats are all in 4:3 aspect ratio, so good support for 4:3 is really important in my workflow.

I know 4:3 isn’t very common anymore, but there’s still a group of enthusiasts working with archival and vintage footage. It would be great if 4:3 support can continue to be maintained, and if possible, improved where it makes sense.

Thanks again for all the hard work on Shotcut—it’s a fantastic piece of software that I really enjoy using.

Best regards,
Martijn

Hi @Martijn
I don’t think you need to worry.
Even if the 4:3 preset was ever removed from the Video Modes, you’d still be able to use Shotcut on 4:3 projects.

Read the Custom and the Automatic sections of this documentation page:

Not only that but some modern action cameras shoot 4x3 as “full sensor” mode to capture the scene as wide as possible. So it’s still a current format, not only archival/enthusiast related.

As MusicalBox mentioned, the video modes have just been reorganised for simplicity but you can always use any type of custom mode, either by manually entering it when needed (in timeline’s Output Properties panel) or even create your own custom presets to reuse them the next time from the dropdown.

Hi Musicalbox and daniel47,

Thank you for your clear answers and explanations. It’s a very good point to set the correct video modes right from the start — I’ll definitely remember that.

I’m glad I don’t have to worry about 4:3.

As a hobby, I do what’s called tapeless recording. I’ve modified a Sony Trinicon tube camera and connected it to a Unisheen UR500 digital recorder. I power the camera with a 12-volt battery. The footage from the tube camera is recorded directly in digital form onto an SD card. What makes the Unisheen recorder unique is that it can record in 4:3 (1024×768) at 60 frames per second, which results in beautifully smooth footage. I really love the character of tube cameras. I also do this with old Video8 cameras.

I edit the footage with great pleasure in Shotcut, which I’m very grateful for. It’s the best video editor for Linux, in my opinion — I really like it.

Thank you very much for your support!

Kind regards,
Martijn Schot (The Netherlands)

I confirm there are no plans to ever remove the 4:3 video mode presets.
