Planar vs regular PCM

What is the difference between “planar” PCM and regular PCM?

From what I can tell by researching ffmpeg is that with within the PCM types of wavs there are interleaved and planar. And that it’s either one or the other. Also from what I can tell the most common is the non-planar

When dealing with more than one channel of audio, are all the samples from a single channel together (planar), or do the samples alternate from one channel to the next for each time point (interleaved).
