Open Other Menu

Windows11 Home 24H2 Build 26100.3775

Shotcut V25.04.14 and V25.04.19:
‘Open Other’ menu no longer appears in the toolbar.
File-> Open Other displays only a restricted choice (Same for Ctrl+Shift+O shortcut).
Normally appears with the latest official version V25.03.29 and older versions.

I haven’t downloaded the latest nightly version yet, but I saw it on Github the other day.

I must say I was a bit surprised. That is the button I use the most in the main toolbar, and on every project.

I also didn’t understand why they removed the convenient button. It was more convenient and familiar for me to press the button than to navigate through the context menus.

I agree that creating new objects has been moved from “File - Open Other” to “File - New”, it is more logical for a beginner. But I am against removing a button from the interface that I use very often.

I changed the category of this post to “Suggestion”. It isn’t a bug if we did it on purpose.

Personally, I like the cleaner interface. But it does add a little extra clicking. I am guilty of complaining about Microsoft and other software vendors when they change the user interface. But I am always able to adjust.

@MusicalBox, @dimadjdocent, @brian. Sorry about that. I didn’t see the button being deleted on Github. It’s also a button I use all the time. I’m going to adapt until he gets back . Thanks

I would like to ask you, if it is not difficult, to make it possible to optionally return this button. I agree with you, a clean interface is good, but it would be even better if the user was given the opportunity to decide for himself whether he needs this button or not.

@brian and others, EEK, that is a total and baffling surprise to me. I use that button all the time…! Why did it go? I just downloaded the Nightly build 25.04.19, and I can’t see “Open Other > Colour” and "Open Other > Text… again, these are features I use constantly. Have they gone as well? Confused!

@jonray These options are now in a dropdown list in File> New
You can see it in @dimadjdocent video capture (above).

What about a Settings menu where we can choose what button(s) we want in the main toolbar?

Ah, OK, thanks, @musicalbox. I had a thorough search and I just couldn’t find it. I didn’t expect to have to go to File > New to add a colour or text. That is usually to open a new project or file, as I understand it from other programs?

The button is on the Timeline toolbar now where it belongs. You don’t usually want to Open Text but rather Add Text to the Timeline. Generators are a new/add thing, not a device/file/location that you open. I am correcting a wrong UI that had been baked too long. For those who liked using the Open Other shortcut, now as menu items in the New submenu you can assign a custom shortcut to any and each of them.

But I can overload all of these back into Open Other dialog and main toolbar button. I know changes are difficult for some.

I apologize, I guess I’m blind or not paying attention. Very convenient new location!

…Because I hadn’t seen the new timeline button :fearful:. Perfect for me. Old people can adapt too, maybe a little slower

Well, I do think it will cause a lot of stress not only for existing users but also us developers and regulars to respond. So, I decided to restore the main toolbar and Open Other dialog items for the remainder of the year to give people time to transition. Still, I know people will continue to use the old location and overlook the new one until the band-aid is removed.

A-ha, it all makes sense now. I hadn’t noticed the new location either:

Great, thanks, @shotcut and @brian, and I apologize too for reacting a tad too quickly and showing a slight level of prickliness!

Good point about it being stressful for developers to respond to. The last thing you want is grief!

I appreciate your willingness to adapt kindly to comments by us mere users!! Thank you!

I like it there in the Timeline toolbar. It does make more sense. :+1:
