Hi folks,
I made and uploaded a new tutorial video to Youtube.

This tutorial shows how to easily adapt transitions from other programs and use them in Shotcut, extending the number of transitions available to the Shotcut user.

The process involves creating a black and white “matte” transition file, then applying it to a clip via the “Mask from file” filter.

Shotcut has a large selection of video transitions (artistic ways of transitioning between one clip and the next) - including Bar Horizontal, Barn Door, Diagonal, Matrix, Iris Circle, etc.

Other video editors, including free ones like Windows Movie Maker, Openshot, Lightworks, Kdenlive and PhotoStage, have built-in transitions too.

This tutorial shows how to easily adapt transitions from other programs and use them in Shotcut, extending the number of transitions available to the Shotcut user.

The process involves creating a black and white “matte” transition file, then applying it to a clip via the “Mask from file” filter.

*It may sound a little difficult - but it isn’t! Follow the concise, clear instructions in this video, and give it a try!

Fascinating! I am still looking for that slow, transparent, double-sided page curl that was my favorite from Sony Vegas Movie Studio. The page curls you guys came up with were pretty good - but the one from Sony Vegas (now Magix) was wonderful. Perhaps I will pursue this when the rains come back to the North West coast.

Here’s a page curl from Windows Movie Maker using @jonray’s method. Might not be slow, transparent, double-sided page curl, but it’s easy to use with the Mask from file filter.

Thanks, @austin. I’m no mathematician (apart from studying A level maths at school…) , but I have to say I am fascinated with the merging of artistic creativity and science/maths you get with the subject of video editing! :smiley:

Nice, @sauron. Reminds me - there’s a page curl effect in @elusien’s GL transitions. Problem is, I can’t find the folder of HTML files of the 36 GL transitions you kindly produced. Have you got the link anywhere?

Hi @kenj69, there’s a lovely Page Curl transition in @elusien’s collection of 36 GL transitions (“Inverted Page Curl”). Just did this in Shotcut in minutes:

I had been wondering myself it would be possible to use transitions from other programs in Shotcut. I find the transitions in Shotcut a bit limited, they all base on the same theme, fading one video over another. In other editors it is possible e.g. to move one video to the side with the new video coming in. I could not find such in Shotcut. But maybe it just me being less experienced.

I have also downloaded the 36 GL Transitions.zip, now what do I do with it?

Download the ZIP file and extract it into a folder/directory.
In Shotcut create a transition from two clips by overlapping the first by the second.
Select the transition and change its PROPERTY to “cut”.
Move the playhead to the beginning of the transition.
Select the “Text: HTML” (or Overlay HTML) filter.
Select the option “Use WebVfx Javascript extension”.
Select one of the 36 GL transitions et voila - you have applied that transition to your video.

edit: The “cut” property change is advisory, try different ones to see if they suit the transition better. Also read the whole of the post mentioned by Sauron to get a better feel for what is possible.

Those filters are cool!
I didn’t see any changes using “cut” or “dissolve” or “bar”.
But that message when ticking “Use WebVfx Javascript extension” gets annoying.
