Being new to video editing I was wandering if when hovering over effects that a little box would appear telling you what they do making it easier to navigate through effects and finding the on that you want.

I’ve made use of this in the past when photo-editing, but it applies equally well for video editing too. All of the blend modes Shotcut supports are described here.
