Making Split Images Independent in Shortcut

Hi everyone, I’m working on an image in Shortcut and I’ve split it into two pieces - left and right. I want to edit the right image, changing its color, without affecting the left image. Here’s what I did:

  1. I opened the right image with Affinity through Shortcut.
  2. I edited the image, changing its color.
  3. I saved the image.

However, when I went back to Shortcut, both images (left and right) had changed. How do I make the right image unique and independent of the left image after splitting them? I want to edit the right image without affecting the left one. Please help!

You just need to place image 1 and image 2 on different tracks. Position image 1 to the left, image 2 to the right (or vise versa) and edit each track independently.

What do yo mean exactly when you say : “I’m working on an image in Shortcut and I’ve split it into two pieces

If the image fills the screen, copy the image to both tracks, use crop:rectangle on the top track, and edit the colours etc as you wish:

It’s normal that any change you make with Photopad is applied to both clips since they’re from the same source image.
It’s that source image that is edited in Photopad.

A possible workaround:

  • Import your image once in the timeline.
  • Position the cursor on that image clip and export a frame (Ctrl+Shift+E).
  • Use that frame as a duplicate for your second clip.

You can then edit each one independently in Photopad.

That is going to work at the file level. Splitting a clip does not duplicate a file. You need to have separate files to have a different look per file made outside of Shotcut filters. You can use your file manager to duplicate the image file, or within Affinity use Save As or its equivalent function. Then, add the new file as a clip in Shotcut.

Thanks, this actual helps and is straightforward. Thanks for the respond.

No problem, @TLR_Pictures I misunderstood you. No worries! BTW, talking of Affinity graphic editing software, for information and anyone who doesn’t know, Affinity is now free, since very recently. Over to Gemini to fill us in with the details:
