I have added a jpg-format pic after a few video clips and want it to last as long as the music lasts which is around 20 seconds. I have tried to ckick on the object, hit properties and make the duration to 20 seconds, but I can’t get it to work. Could someone please give me a step by step explanation?

Hover over the right-hand edge of the jpg clip (on the timeline) until the edge turns red (and an arrow icon appears). Then left-click the red edge, hold, and drag the edge to the right. A blue rectangle will appear with numbers on it - these are seconds, so you can judge easily when you have reached 20 seconds duration.
