How do I duplicate a track

Trying to duplicate a track to create a before/after split but pasting the content to a new track removes the content from the original (copied) track.
I tried cutting to clipboard then pasting into two tracks, but once I have pasted into one track, pasting again into another track removes it from the first.
Is this a bug or am I going about it the wrong way?

Depending on what you’re trying to do, perhaps your “Ripple and Trim” button is active (rightmost in the timeline toolbar) - try disabling it:
