Download Not Working

Hello everybody - I’ve got Shotcut saved to an external hard drive and have updated a couple of times in the past. The current Shotcut update however will not download to my PC or external hard drive. An error message indicating that the UMC or drive is not accessible/available etc appears. I can’t even download directly to the PC’s hard drive. I am using a new PC 64GB RAM, i7 processor etc and the previous version of Shotcut (currently installed) works perfectly. I’ve not received a response from Shotcut after commenting on the Facebook page notifying of the update. Anny assistance will be appreciated., Cheers, Keith

That reads like the problem is in your web browser on your computer. Are you having a problem downloading files with your web browser?

If you are having a problem starting the Shotcut software itself or within Shotcut after starting do not use the word “download” as that is very confusing. Shotcut does not “download” (except for the very rare new case in the latest version to download speech-to-text AI models).

Hi and thanks for your response.

I have ‘downloaded’ several music plugins (large libraries).

I am able to open an existing version of Shotcut from an external hard drive and can create and save projects from that.

I am not able to update to the current version of Shotcut, despite being able to using the same PC, web browsers and Windows 11.

A screenshot attached.

That is not downloading; that is installing. You previously installed to an external drive. The next time you run the same installer it uses the previously used install path. However, external drive paths can change. Don’t do that! You should use the portable download with an external drive, and you can extract it to the same location as a previous install or not. You can have different versions that is easier to manage via portables. The installer is merely a glorified zip extractor.

We use something on Windows called Inno Setup for the installer. It does some things for us such as managing the install location and uninstalling.

If you want to try to fix your installation, you need to either remove or edit some registry keys. It depends on whether you installed it for only your user:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Shotcut_is1
or for all users:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Shotcut_is1
(it might have a different suffix)
