Convert to edit-friendly

I recorded a screencast with VLC player and got the ‘Convert to edit-friendly’ warning when I tried to load it.

I’m recording in H.264/MP3 format, if that matters.

I’m assuming there is some degradation of video quality in the conversion process, so I’d like to avoid it if possible. Is there a way I should be screencasting differently?
