Automatically apply a consistent, adjustable crossfade transition between multiple selected clips to ensure a smooth viewing experience

Hey there, I’m digging this old thread because I have the same need. I want to simply create transitions between many clips that I edited on my timeline.

I use the timeline to edit my videos,

  • to make sure it matches the music for instance
  • to fine tune the in and out
    etc

The timeline is the source of truth, and having to use the playlist wouldn’t work for my workflow, unlike @brian is suggesting.

One alternative workflow I would suggest would be to be able to select the current timeline as the source for the slideshow generator.

It’s been a while since this thread was created, and it doesn’t sound like the feature was developped. I wonder if there has been any alternative flow in the mean time.

Thanks

edit: It’s pretty dumb but I could just feed some AI with the MLT, and ask them the following. I just tested with a very short file and the following prompt

This is a MLT file for shotcut timeline. It has 4 videos, and 1 cross fade transition between the first 2 videos. Please add a similar crossfade transition of 0.5s between the other videos

it worked well.

I mean, if directly editing the MLT file is on the table (which it seems like it is since you’re amenable to passing the MLT file to an LLM), it’s probably easy enough to copy-paste the transition filter to each chain.

It’s obviously not ideal, but it’s all we have for now to not spend hours doing this :person_shrugging:
I’m wondering why it’s not been done, although it’s a clear feature request for many many years now.

It has been done in the form of the slideshow generator. I designed it for exactly this use case. You have dismissed the suggestion without attempting to change your workflow. It would be helpful if you could provide a demonstration that shows how the slideshow generator cannot work.

I gave you some reasons, but I can give you more.

This works probably for a slideshow of images. It’s just now how people edit a vacations video. Here’s a common scenario:

I have 200 videos in my playlist.

  • I select some, the ones that are the nicest, and add them to my timeline.
Those videos have a rough in and out at this point in time, when I add them to the timeline. I just make sure to always take at least a couple seconds after the beginning and before the end, to leave images for a cross-fade. Some videos are originally 50s, some 30, some 10, but the cut I make end up being around 5 to 10s, in general.

  • I add some filters to some, make some speed adjustment bc some need slowmo/speed up, often based on time markers

  • I stabilize/zoom if needed

  • I add a music track or 2 depending on the length

  • I will tweak the in and out of every single video in the timeline so that it matches with the music

  • It’s important for me to have an overview of all the videos I have, to be able to swtich eventually.

  • I add titles

  • totally at the end I want to add a cross-fade between all videos and titles

Now you can probably understand:

  • the list of videos and their order is not fixed, I don’t want to make choices this early in the process
  • there’s no way I know early-on where my video should start/stop, this will depend on the music. Having to change the in/out and regenerate the slideshow is absolutely not thinkable.
  • I need to be able to do changes in speed/zoom, this would break an already existing transitions

I hope that’s clear.

Closing this suggestion as will-not-include. Users are not entitled to feature requests. Learn that transitions (that are not cuts) between everything is a usually a bad thing.
