It has it’s own thread and the timeline can build the Audio wave form and the Thumb nail clips only for the section of the time line which is currently in view.
After that section has been populated then start populating the rest of the time line but if the view is changed by the user to another section that is partially unpopulated or completely unpopulated process that segment before continuing to populate the rest of the timeline.
This should help with the displaying of the work and an improved workflow.
